MAXELL, Ltd. (hereinafter "Maxell") has succeeded in achieving the highest capacity*1 in the industry for cylindrical type lithium manganese dioxide battery (hereinafter "cylindrical type CR battery") with high energy density using its proprietary advanced electrode technology.



Main features of Maxell's high-capacity cylindrical type CR battery "CR17500AU":

· Balances high energy density and long-term reliability*2 lasting more than 10 years

· Holds high operating voltage even at the end of discharge

· Demonstrates superior performance at -40℃

· Supports multiple-cells package configurations


Cylindrical type CR battery market is estimated to grow as demand for communication devices increases through the development of monitoring and sensing technology in recent years. As devices such as smart meter, IoT devices and emergency communication devices are designed to have higher performance and multifunction, the power consumption of those devices also continues to increase drastically. Under these circumstances, the batteries for those devices will be required to have highly improved performance in capacity and lifetime.


Maxell has been developing cylindrical type CR battery since 2005 and has achieved longterm stable discharge characteristics with its original proprietary technologies of sealing structure, improved electrical-conductivity structure and negative electrode material. Superior long-term reliability*2 of Maxell's cylindrical type CR battery which is ideal for use as a power source in industrial applications such as IoT devices and smart meters, is highly evaluated by the communication device manufacturers of smart meters, sensors and security devices.


In response to the demands for high-capacity and long-life batteries, Maxell has succeeded in drastically improving high energy density, which has been made possible by optimizing the materials and battery structure of existing model "CR17450AH". Through the development of these technologies, Maxell has achieved the highest capacity*1 in the industry of 17500 size cylindrical type CR batteries. In addition, capacity utilization rate of newly developed battery is 90%*3, which enables stable discharge.


Commercialization of high-capacity cylindrical type CR battery "CR17500AU" is planned for fiscal year 2021. The high-capacity battery corresponds to the demand for increased energy usage brought by multifunction of various industrial equipment. Compared with conventional cylindrical type CR batteries, newly developed battery is expected to reduce the number of batteries used in IoT devices, which will help IoT device manufacturers to reduce the number of components.


Additionally, Maxell is applying for patents for the technologies in relation to its highcapacity cylindrical type CR battery "CR17500AU".


Maxell will continue to contribute to society through the development of batteries with highperformance, safety and reliability while improving the technologies for high capacity and long life by leveraging its analog core technologies*4.


*1: highest capacity: According to research in 17500 size cylindrical type lithium manganese dioxide battery by Maxell as of February 17th, 2020

*2: long-term reliability: Designed lifetime at 20℃ when not yet used. Actual lifetime will vary depending on conditions such as discharge current and temperature.

*3: capacity utilization rate of newly developed battery is 90%: The original negative electrode material maintains low internal resistance even at high depths of discharge and ensures stable discharge.

*4: analog core technologies: Maxell's core technologies which have been cultivated since its foundation, “Mixing & Dispersion Technology”, “Fine Coating Technology" and "High Precision Molding & Forming Technology"
