The automobile industry has experienced a century of development. In addition to traditional fuel cars, as consumers’ awareness of environmental protection increases, new energy vehicles have become an inevitable choice for the development of a low-carbon economy and an essential trend for the future of the automobile industry. New energy, also known as unconventional energy, refers to various forms of energy other than conventional ones. The increase in electronic control, car entertainment multimedia, navigation, car communication, and other electronic systems in new energy vehicles has led to more and more electronic circuit protection ports. In addition, the electromagnetic environment of car ports is harsher than consumer electronics. As the core components of new energy vehicles, surge protection of the three electrical systems is not only about the performance of the vehicle but also closely related to driving safety.
WAYON WSxxP30SMC(-B)-AT series is a highly reliable automotive-grade TVS product, as a clamp-type overvoltage protection device, which can be used in parallel in both ends of the protected circuit. The series has features such as precise conduction, fast response, and strong surge absorption capacity, and is suitable for transient overvoltage protection of vehicle body power, navigation gauges, lights, and other ports. The WAYON WSxxP30SMC(-B)-AT series adopts the commonly used SMC (8.0×6.0×2.5mm) package, and its small size can meet the transient overvoltage protection requirements of many parts of the automobile.
TVS Working Principle:
When the circuit is in a stable operating state, the TVS device has no action. At this time, its high resistance ensures that almost no current flows through the TVS and does not affect the normal operation of the circuit. When there is a transient overvoltage in the circuit that exceeds the normal circuit operating voltage, the TVS diode avalanches, providing an ultra-low resistance path to the transient current, while absorbing the high current and clamping the voltage between its two terminals at a predetermined value of VC (Clamping Voltage), thus protecting the back-end circuit from damage due to transient high-energy shock. When the transient overvoltage is over, the TVS automatically resumes the reverse cutoff state, allowing the entire circuit to enter normal voltage.
As a protection device for AC or DC voltage ports, TVS needs to follow different surge test standards for different voltage application ports, such as IEC 61000-4-2 for electrostatic protection, IEC 61000-4-5 for power port protection and ITU K21 for signal port protection. Due to the special automotive application environment, the overvoltage protection of automotive TVS needs to comply with ISO 7637-2 and ISO 16750-2 standards:
In addition to special overvoltage test standards for automotive applications, automotive-grade TVSs are required to pass the AEC-Q101 standard "AEC-Q101 Failure Mechanism Based Stress Test Qualification for Discrete Semiconductors in Automotive Applications" in terms of reliability, in which the reliability test has more stringent requirements than non-automotive-grade products:
