The Microtronics myDatalogC3 and IoT platform in conjunction with TELE Haase EcoX system
Automated energy conservation through IoT with the expertise of Microtronics and TELE Haase. (Technical Interview by Stephanie Englert, x-technik AUTOMATION)
There is a vast potential for hidden energy-saving opportunities. IoT (Internet of Things) technology can help exploit this potential, as we demonstrated in two construction site projects in Vienna and Krems. But what added value do companies derive from this investment and what can TELE Haase’s IoT solution, which uses the Microtronics platform, achieve?
The task: The monitoring of energy consumption on the construction site, taking potential savings into account as early as the project planning starts, without interrupting the ongoing construction work.
The solution: The Microtronics myDatalogC3 and IoT platform in conjunction with TELE Haase EcoX system.
Benefits: Reduction of energy waste, reporting, and use of alternative energy producers (sustainable).
When we think about energy efficiency at work, we tend to overlook the possibilities on a construction site. However, there is significant potential for energy savings if we monitor energy consumption as early as possible. The team from TELE Haase is committed to improving energy consumption, but what is it all about in detail?
According to the TELE Haase team, the construction sites of the future will focus on a variety of smart technologies to reduce their environmental impact during construction. “It’s not about the finished property meeting sustainability targets, but about the construction site with all its facets,” explains Peter Dollfuss, Product Management, IoT & Digital Services at TELE Haase. Renewable energies play a crucial role. But where exactly are the energy-saving potentials? And what does this mean for the entire project management? Dollfuss and his colleague Igor Senjak, responsible for Business Development IoT at TELE Haase, are currently managing two pilot projects, one in Vienna and the other in Lower Austria near Krems.
The container clusters at the construction sites are the biggest energy guzzlers. “Their energy demand is usually lower than the one shown as the final consumption,” says Dollfuss in conversation. “At TELE Haase, we come into play with our IoT solutions exactly where you wouldn’t suspect it at first,” he continues: “Our job is to generate and evaluate all the data from the construction site.” In addition to potential savings and energy monitoring for container clusters, the experts are also talking about the possibilities of operating micro wind turbines installed on cranes at a height of 30 meters, for example, or generators that are powered by hydrogen and thus operate without emissions. As the person responsible for the project, Dollfuss is very confident that, in addition to simple monitoring and optimization of energy consumption (energy saving) and load balancing, it will be possible to intelligently control the energy of all consumers and energy producers.
Track the consumption, take actions
To effectively regulate energy consumption and avoid wastage, it’s essential to track energy usage accurately. The EcoX-System is a newly developed modular IoT system that helps us achieve this goal. According to Igor Senjak, this system’s functionalities allow us to manage energy loads and use alternative energy sources like hydrogen, solar, and wind energy to power construction sites in a more eco-friendly manner. The EcoX-System enables remote monitoring and control of electrical loads, which helps optimize energy consumption on the construction site. The results of the monitoring are available as digital data on a web-based application, which can be used for sustainability reports. The IoT system’s energy monitoring, balancing, reporting, and energy-saving features ensure that we utilize energy efficiently and reduce waste. The EcoX-System is a game-changer for energy management in the construction industry.
IoT as added value
Anna Kerschner, Partner Manager at Microtronics Engineering, based in Ruprechtshofen in Lower Austria, can tell us more about the EcoX-System solution, as it includes some of Microtronics’ technical components. With our components and tools, we are trying to make the construction industry more sustainable, just as the experts at TELE Haase, our partner, have already described. TELE Haase uses our components for solutions, such as the EcoX system in this example, to create real added value for their customers. In detail, it is about the control cabinet controller myDatalogC3, which enables data acquisition, communication, and control in the control cabinet. The data is transmitted to the IoT platform, which is also provided by Microtronics and hosted in Austria.
There are two options for the application logic: a basic software is available, or customers can program their own applications to customize the myDatalogC3 to fit their specific needs. “myDatalogC3 offers a reliable real-time data connection, 27 industrial interfaces (mA, digital) for data acquisition from analog and digital sensors as well as signal transmitters, bus interfaces Modbus RS485, RS232 and CAN for seamless communication with machines, control units and sensors,” adds Kerschner, who is convinced of the functionalities offered by the solution. Furthermore, relay outputs for control and telecontrol are available and a PLC, router, and firewall are installed for secure data transmission and protection against unauthorized access. Data transmission is done with mobile radio (2G, 3G, 4G, M1/NB1), WiFi and LAN.
