UL 94规范是采用直接火焰燃烧试验方法的一个示例。这种已被长期采用的方法是在受控条件下,对垂直或水平安装的样本直接施加火焰。而间接火焰燃烧方法则是对样品施加热源。灼热丝试验是间接火焰燃烧方法的一个示例。使用这些方法得到的试验结果可用来比较材料的阻燃、自动熄灭(如果起燃)和燃烧形成的滴落物不引起火焰蔓延的可能性。为了更好地理解直接和间接方法的区别。
国际电工委员会(IEC)于2001年制定了灼热丝试验方法,因为原有的试验方法已无法覆盖所有起燃源。具体地讲,灼热丝试验主要用于模拟因连接元器件过载或器件过热引起电气设备故障时可能产生的发热效应。
