A Case Study of a Manufacturing Company with Failed UPS
In the manufacturing industry, where digitalization and automation are progressing rapidly, the importance of UPS is increasing. However, regular maintenance is essential to ensure the safe operation of UPS.
A manufacturing company had installed multiple UPSs in its factory to prevent production line shutdowns in the event of a power outage. However, when a blackout occurred due to lightning, the UPS failed to provide backup power, and the production equipment stopped.
A Cause: Battery Drain in UPS System
An investigation revealed that the battery life of the UPS was shorter than expected. Large power surges occurred when large power-consuming devices in the factory were turned on, and the voltage in the factory dropped each time. As a result, the UPS frequently switched to battery backup mode, which caused the battery to wear out faster than expected.
In addition, the company was not managing battery replacement well, and sometimes the alarm would go off, requiring maintenance.
